I have always enjoyed doing photo restorations, old photos are cool. I like that I can do stuff to keep them around longer. I used to a lot them back in the day, and sadly, last year I found myself not doing any of this kind of work at all. This year I plan to get back into the wonderful world of photo restoration before I go too long and forget how do to it. To start with I decided to give myself a project.

I always been somewhat fascinated with Billy the Kid. Last year I read the book “To Hell on a Fast Horse” great book that I recommend to anyone with an interest in the Billy the Kid story. So I guess it would make sense that I would track down a hi-res copy of the famous Billy the Kid photo and restore it. It interesting project, I think I might track down a few other famous photos and do the same.

Magic Slim

The legendary blues guitarist Magic Slim passed away today at 75. I got the chance to meet Magic Slim backstage at a music festival in 2008, shortly after taking this photo. I miss doing the blues festivals. I would always find myself backstage at some point in the day talking and listening to the old blues men like Magic. Meeting guys like this will always be the highlight of my career. They were a rare breed.

Joe Buck Yourself

Way back in November I photographed the legendary Joe Buck, or as he is also known Joe Buck Yourself. Joe is a former member of Hank Williams III’s band, and The Legendary Shack Shakers. He also has an association with the band Antiseen that I remember from back in my South Carolina day.

I’ve been a music photographer for a long time, certain kinds of bands I like to shoot more than ever. There are certain acts I’ve waited my whole career to photograph, when I showed up at Hodi’s Halfnote last week to photograph the Japanese two piece named Mugen Hoso I didn’t know that they would turn out to be one of those bands. This is one of the most energetic, intense, crazy, and talented rock outfits that I have ever photographed. At times I had a hard time just keeping track of guitarist Hiro in my view finder. It was a crazy night that left the audience amazed and screaming for more.

New West Fest

The Reverend Horton Heat

The Rev. Horton Heat is one of those bands that I have wanted to see live for a long time. He’s played this town about a dozen times since I’ve lived here, but one reason or another I have always had to miss the show. No more, a few weeks ago I found myself photographing the god Reverend. I’m glad I finally got a chance to check out a legend.

In the Midst of The Lion’s Liar

Living in Fort Collins one can become so immersed in the local scene that it’s easy to forget about other scenes going on around the state. It’s not often that I make it down to Denver, but last week I made the trip down to the infamous Lion’s Liar near Downtown Denver with local band Fifty to Phoenix. I love Denver in all its venues and the Lion’s Liar was one I hadn’t been to before. Denver has an awesome music scene, and one that easily rivals Fort Collins. After all it is a bigger city.

Sadly, this time I didn’t get to see any the Denver bands, most them were busy with the Underground Music Festival going on nearby. This was the first year of the UMS, which is apparently so new that I had no idea it was going on. I have to catch that one next year. The Lion’s Liar show did not disappoint. Fifty to Phoenix always puts on a face melting performance, in fact, all the bands did. The night started with the Phoenix, followed by San Diego band Break the Cycle and finished with an awesome set by Chicago’s Ideamen.

Denver never disappoints.

Locust, A Day in The Recording Studio.

One of the perks of my career has been having the chance to see behind the scenes of the local music industry. In a previous post “Hanging with the Phoenix” I touched upon that subject. I’m going to continue on that theme by posting some photos that I did back in January. In January I went to Backbone Studios in Loveland, Colorado with the band Common Anomaly who were spending the day recording their song “Locust” (which is currently available for free download when click on the link) I shot a lot of photos as well as video during that ten hours or so of recording. Since that day, I have been patiently awaiting the release of the single so that I could put together a video from the footage. I am currently editing that video, which will be finished and released within the next few weeks.
